Summit Orthopedic Specialists now offers patients with Dupuytren’s contracture the new FDA-approved non-surgical treatment Xiaflex. The treatment is offered by Sean Colio, M.D., a board certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, who is one of the first in the Sacramento area to offer Xiaflex.
Dupuytren’s contracture is a progressive hand condition caused by the growth of thick, rope-like cords of tissue that gradually pull the finger permanently toward the palm. This contracture reduces finger range of motion and grip strength, interfering with everyday activities such as shaking hands and grasping objects.
Until Xiaflex, surgery was a primary form of treatment. Xiaflex improves quality of life for those suffering from Dupuytren’s through a less invasive treatment option for restoring hand function.
The FDA-approved treatment involves injecting a mixture of enzymes directly into a Dupuytren’s cord. The proteins in the Xiaflex injection help to break the cord of tissue that is causing the finger to bend. Patients with mild to severe contractures experience greater hand movement and function with Xiaflex treatment, most requiring only one to two injections.
